The Future of Non-Conventional Hydrocarbons in India

Meenakshi Agnihotri, Stuti Tripathi

Abstract:

Non-conventional hydrocarbons are the beginning of world wide revolution that has the potential to revolutionize and alter the price and availability of fossil fuels. These resources like shale gas, coal bed methane, gas hydrates, heavy oils and oil sands can provide a significant contribution to the total energy supply of the world. Since their extraction is challenging and difficult because of their location in the bed of lower permeability, makes their production yield intrinsically difficult to predict .Today the continuous depletion in the conventional energy sources and demand for the cleaner energy has increased the investment in the non-conventional sources across the world. India is known for its abundant reserve of gas hydrates which themselves are rich sources of hydrocarbons. Gas hydrates can serve as a vital key for ensuring energy security. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the prospects of non-conventional hydrocarbons, the current scenario of their availability and production in India.
