Coal Bed Methane/coal bed gas/coal mine methane is methane (i.e. Natural gas) produced during coalification process. Entrapment occurs due to adsorption of methane gas molecules into the solid matrix of the coal. Methane entrapped is normally found in near-liquid state. While in conventional reservoirs the fluids trapped have migrated from source to reservoir rocks, in coal seams the fluids are stored in the same media in which they are adsorbed. Coal is dual porosity media where the larger amount of gas is stored in micro pores having low permeability. The flow to production wells however occurs through macro pores which are more permeable and hence allow the gas to flow upwards along with the water in these pores. The characteristics of coal bed reservoirs change significantly under minute variations in temperature and pressure as opposed to the relatively harder conventional reservoirs like sandstone.
Coal is the main source of energy supply in India meeting almost half of India’s needs of commercial energy. India being the 3rd largest coal producing country after China and USA has reserves that constitute almost 7.1% of the world total while its conventional energy reserves constitute only 0.8% of the same. Driven by the motivation of possessing large commercially viable coal reserves, the government came up with efforts to boost CBM technology in India.
This poster aims to shed light upon India’s advancements in the field of CBM technology along with a detailed profit analysis. In this poster, India’s various activities at places of gas prominence and concerns regarding the feasibility of projects at such places would be discussed. This paper would also study India’s decision and policy making and would provide a comparative analysis of mode of working and status in CBM.
